THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

10 garden trends you’ll be seeing everywhere this summer

  1. EGG CHAIRS

Swinging egg chairs are on the up. One of summer’s biggest trends, MADE saw a 234% search increase over the past year, with more people looking for ways to create a relaxing space outside.

Considering on getting one yourself? The team at MADE add: “These must-have comfort additions offer a cosy place to unwind with a book or a tipple, giving full-body support and allowing you to take the weight off your feet.”

  1. RATTAN CORNER SOFAS

A modern and stylish addition to any garden, rattan corner sofas are dubbed to be all the rage in 2021, with searches increasing by 537% in just one year. We might be spending more time at home, but this hasn’t stopped households from sprucing up their outdoor spaces.

“Rattan is back again to dominate gardens,” say MADE. “It seems homeowners are trying to maximise their outdoor space seating in order to comfortably seat their long-missed friends and family, after a year of lockdown, this summer.”

  1. TEAK FURNITURE

With alfresco dining on the horizon, teak furniture searches are also on the up. From wooden sun loungers to practical tables, this close-grained hardwood material is famed for its durability, water resistance and superior performance.

“Teak garden furniture is a staple of any zen garden, often being the look of choice for Japanese-inspired gardens, and with Japandi being such a big interior trend this year, it makes sense that homeowners would want to continue the zen into the garden,” add MADE.

  1. WOODEN PERGOLA

Create a scene-stealing look this summer with a wooden pergola. Providing protection from the sun, they offer slight shading without making the space feel overheated or entrapped.

“Searches for garden pergola have risen by 124%, but more specifically it seems people are looking for corner pergolas, searches for which have increased by 236%. Wooden Pergolas and gazebos are also key for zen outdoor spaces, these are either inspired by Mediterranean exteriors or, again, Japanese,” explain MADE.

Depending on what pergola you opt for, some are crafted from solid timber while others from more affordable metal and fabric.

  1. OUTDOOR CINEMA SPACE

Movie night, anyone? With warm weather on the horizon, now is the perfect time to get your space set for a garden movie marathon. Thanks to nationwide lockdowns and closed cinema doors, searches for garden projectors have grown by a whopping 400%.

If you’re looking to create a cosy space for the whole family to relax outdoors, you’ll need a plain white sheet, projector, outdoor lights to set the mood and lots of cosy cushions.

  1. GARDEN BAR

From Tiki bar sheds to garage bars, cheers to better days with your own backyard bar. You can either purchase a ready-made one or challenge yourself to make your own.

“Pubs and bars have been sorely missed, but many made do by creating their own, and why stop in 2021? Cheap drinks and later closing has pushed searches for garden bars up by 122% in the last 12 months. At least it gives another option if the pub garden is full,” explain MADE.

  1. OUTDOOR PIZZA OVEN

Keep the good times flowing with a must-have outdoor wood-fired pizza oven. With many Brits looking for ways to brighten up long lockdown days, we’re not surprised that searches have increased by 243% in the past year. You’ll be able to create delicious, authentic pizzas that will have you dreaming of an Italian getaway.

  1. OUTDOOR RUGS

Bring the inside out with an outdoor rug. Made from fabrics that can withstand wear and tear from rain, they are perfect for adding character to your patio, decking, gazebo or porch.

MADE explain: “Outdoor rugs are a luxe addition to gardens and it seems a lot of people want in on the trend. Searches for outdoor rugs have had an increase in searches of 124% and outdoor rugs UK 326%.”

  1. CHIMINEA

Ideal for summer entertaining and parties, chimineas will add warmth and ambience to any outdoor space. Looking to prolong your summer soiree when the sun goes in? Add one of these to the top of your wish list…

“The British summer is unpredictable, during the day it can be scorching hot but come sunset those temperatures can drop. For this reason, chimenea searches have soared. Particularly, cast iron chiminea has had a 236% increase, and chiminea fire pit has had a huge 1710% increase in searches over the past year.”

  1. GARDEN OFFICE POD

With remote working on the up, many households have had to rethink their office space – or build a new one entirely. According to MADE, garden office pods have increased by 174% over the past year.

Adding a garden structure is a great first step to increase both the functionality and value of our homes. If you’re looking for something a little different, why not consider a garden shed. Simply pop a desk inside, ensure you have access to the Internet, and it will provide a brilliant space to work productively.
