Day1 24 SLEEPS UNTIL CHRISTMAS DAY

1St December – that’s right only 24 sleeps until Christmas. That will seem loads of sleeps or hardly any sleeps accordingto your age. Your age is also defined by the amount of excitement or stress thatis conjured up knowing it is 1st December and 24 sleeps to Christmas.
The main event today is the opening of the first door on the advent calendar. The usual discussion follows, is it 24 doors or 25doors?
I am forever trying to come up with new and original advent calendars for my four grandchildren.
This year I have created my own family advent calendar by going to CEWE photo printing services. With this service you use your own main large photograph with 24 separate ones one under each door.
I was and am so proud of my creation.
Freya (5 almost 6) loved it, so did George (2) but I don’t think he had a clue what it was. Rory (6) was hugely disappointed due to there being no chocolate. But Ewan (3) was the most excited of all.
I was well satisfied, if one out of four was wildly excited and a second one mildly excited I had done a sterling job.
The same afternoon as I gave him the advent calendar Ewan babysat Grandad. Just Grandad and Ewan against the world.
Ewan wanted something to eat so we raided Mummy and Daddy’s goody cupboard. He chose a packet of crisps.
What? As a Grandad I’ve not had the luxury of Child Nutritional Food Classes. The crisps were quality. Walkers plain. In my day you got what you were given which was mainly scraps of food the dog had left.
After getting through the crisps, probably took him 30 seconds, Ewan asked for pudding.
I asked him what he wanted. He took me by the hand and dragged me to the advent calendar and said one of those.
I’m very quick on the uptake and realised he thought there were chocolates in the advent calendar. I explained that there were no chocolates in the calendar and even if there were you could not open them until 1st December.
It was the last straw. He was not happy. He expressed his hatred for the calendar. (Not his words but my interpretation of his actions.)
My joy at thinking Ewan was overwhelmed with excitement by my creativity was obviously unfounded. Ewan’s massive excitement was because he thought it was filled with chocolate for him.
So one moderately enthusiastic grandchild plus George isn’t too bad I reassure myself.
CEWE do produce a chocolate advent calendar. I’m just a cheapskate and underestimated the fact that my grandchildren given the choice much prefer chocolate to photographs of the family
