  1. CHRISTMAS WORDS

Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

For the angelic voices of Christmas, tune into the UK’s BBC Radio Four on Christmas Eve and enjoy Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from King’s College, Cambridge.

Now broadcast to over 30 million listeners, the festival had its beginnings after the First World War. Eric Milner-White, dean of the college was so shattered by what he experienced as army padre on the Western Front that on his return to Cambridge he wanted to revive Christmas worship.

First broadcast in 1928, this service follows the same format every year. It famously opens with a young solo chorister singing ‘Once In Royal David’s City’. None of the 16 choristers know who is going to be the solo is until the news is read out on the hour before the broadcast. The choir’s director then nods to the chosen boy and the crystal notes of ‘Once in Royal …’ mark, for many the official start to Christmas.

2018 saw the Centenary celebration of the event.
