Diary Dates: Roald Dahl Day Friday 13 September 2019 should go:
The countdown to Roald Dahl Day on Friday 13 September has begun. This year’s theme is bravery, and leading the celebrations is the ever-ingenious Matilda.
There’s all sorts of ways to celebrate, from Dahlicious Dress-Up to simply reading your favourite story again. Here are some quick Roald Dahl-inspired timetable twists you can try. These are taken from this year’s marvellous Roald Dahl Day party pack and includes page references so you can quickly find templates and printable work sheets.
Eat some toast and honey together, just like Miss Honey and Matilda! Then make your own Roald Dahl Day party hat to wear throughout the day (page 5 of the Party Pack)
Tune in to this year’s 35 minute interactive lesson with BBC Teach. It’s available to watch from 8AM over on their website. The lesson includes extracts read by Eniola Aluko, Bella Ramsey and Sir Michael Palin. Puffin author, Roald Dahl fan and YouTube comedian, Humza Arshad will also be in the studio.
The lesson explores the concept of being brave, standing up for what you believe in and using the power of words to change the world around you. Pupils will be encouraged to think about characterisation, conflict in storytelling and persuasive language in the most giganticus way!
Play a game of ‘What’s the time, Miss Trunchbull?’ A Matilda spin on the classic, ‘What’s the time, Mister Wolf?
Decorate your classroom door to look like a magical library, Matilda’s favourite place to be, and print copies of Matilda’s reading diary for the whole class to use!
Enter this year’s competition. Challenge pupils to create a new classmate for Matilda. Winners will get a set of Roald Dahl books for their school, a Quentin Blake print and tickets to see Matilda the Musical. Inspiration and entry details on page 14 of the pack!
Warm-up your drawing muscles using one of the draw-along videos with Quentin Blake.
Finish the day with a reading from your favourite Roald Dahl book and give each chiddler a copy of the Roald Dahl Day certificate to take home with them (page 23 of the Party Pack)!

Hot Cross Bun Day (Has someone got that wrong?)
Whilst hot cross buns pre-date Christianity, they were historically only eaten on Good Friday as a Christian symbol of the crucifixion. However, they are now widely available and eaten throughout the year. Hot Cross Bun Day encourages you to consider the roots of the hot cross bun, and to take a day to enjoy hot cross buns.
