Six weird Christmas carols

We can’t let the festive season pass without picking something up with the festive theme from The Daily Mash and this is it. So, sorry about the language. I have already toned down the title, but I have left the body of the article in their talk. It loses it if I amend it. I just add my apologies. But let’s go!

THE festive season is upon us, and carollers around the country are warming up to shout weird shit. What the f**k are these classics about?

God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen

Ladies, you’ve got Girls Just Want To Have Fun and that Shania Twain one for your nights out. This one’s for the blokes of the 17th century. Never mind that it’s in a terrifying minor key and it’s the only carol that features Satan, just focus on the tidings of comfort and joy, yeah?

We Three Kings of Orient Are

Finally, a carol where you get to use syntax like Yoda. And then you reach the verses about gifts, explaining cheerfully that myrrh is to represent ‘sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying’. Normal new baby things that were definitely on Mary’s Pinterest mood board.

Ding Dong Merrily On High

Imitating a doorbell is a great and not batshit way to start any song. The real issue is the multiple instances of verb forms that simply don’t exist. ‘Let steeple bells be swungen’? Absolutely not.

I Saw Three Ships

First, shut the f**k up about some ships. Second, apparently they were crewed by our Saviour Christ and his hitherto unmentioned lady? Do you realise how badly this buggers up New Testament continuity?

Good King Wenceslas

Look, however great a monarch Wenceslas was, and however mad fun it is to say the word ‘cruel’ with two syllables, there’s no reason he should get his own song at Christmas. Carols should be about Jesus or, you know, his disciples and prophets and shit. Why are we even talking about one king’s overdue change of heart?

The Little Drummer Boy

Here’s where we all pretend to be a little boy who had the nerve to go visit a newborn with a loud musical instrument. There’s no way we should be celebrating how much he fucked up Mary’s sleep training. That pa-rum-pum-pumming prick should be on a list, not in a song.

The Top 10 most Googled song lyrics of 2021 in the UK

Ok, not exactly a Christmas Top 10 but it is announced at Christmas.

Lady GagThe Top 10 most Googled song lyrics of 2021 in the UKa’s Poker Face had the most googled lyrics of any song in the UK of 2021, Google has revealed.

By George Griffiths

Coming out ahead of Number 1 hits like Adele’s Easy On Me and Olivia Rodrigo’s Good 4 U, Poker Face (which was first released in the UK in 2009) topped the yearly Google Trends poll which analyses the internet search habits of UK residents.

But why has a 12 year old (yes, really!) Number 1 hit dominated conversation in 2021?

Well, naturally, it’s thanks to a TikTok trend. Namely, a trend that sought to uncover explicit lyrics buried deep in the songs post-chorus that everyone (even radio stations playing the track) had missed.

Basically, what you have thought for years is a chopped reverb vocal of Gaga going “Poker face poke-poke-poke-er-face” is actually…well…something a lot more explicit.

Gaga herself has admitted in interviews going back as far as 2009 that in line with the song’s themes (it’s a celebration of bisexuality) that she actually says “poker face…f-f-f*ck her face.” Apparently, only one station in the US correctly heard the lyrics at the time and censored the song. In light of the discovery, the song’s official lyrics on Genius have also been updated with the explicit lyrics intact.

So there you have it! It also helps that Poker Face is one of Gaga’s most recogniseable hits to the general public. In the UK, it topped the Official Singles Chart for three weeks as her second Number 1 single after Just Dance, and is still Gaga’s second best-selling track here to this day.

The rest of the Top 10 result is included for you below, which also features Olivia Rodrigo as the most dominant act, with two entries in total for Drivers License and Good 4 U.

Elsewhere, Olivia’s Drivers License and Lil Nas X’s Montero (Call Me By Your Name) have been revealed as the most googled songs of 2021 worldwide. You can find the full Top of that here.
