CORONABOBS ISOLATION DAY 96 – Diary of a Self-Isolator Friday 19th June 2020
One of the best jobs I have ever had was being a paperboy. The best was delivering Sunday morning newspapers 7.00am till 12.30pm for 4-5 years in the 1960s. The reason it was 4 hours is because I collected cash for the week’s paper bill. That’s what made it great meeting different people.
I then went on to open up a newsagent at 5.30am and make up rounds for the deliverers and get them out to them, before going on to my proper day job.
With such a history of the love of newspapers I found this letter interesting in the latest edition of “Yours” magazine.
I am the account manager for a newsagent in Newark, Notts and we have more than 2,000 customers to whom we deliver newspapers daily.
During the whole time of lockdown all our newspaper deliverers 90% of whom are teenagers have not let us down. We have taken on more than 200 new customers who have had to self-isolate.
I would like to pay tribute to the youngsters who turn up to deliver come rain or shine to make sure everyone gets their paper or magazine. They are all heroes in our eyes. The older generation especially are pleased that they have still been able to get their paper delivered to read with their breakfast.
We hear so much bad press about teenagers, but we have a great bunch of truly dedicated deliverers. – Christine Burgin, Notts
