1              In 1934, Rolls Royce leased two hangars at the Hucknall airfield in Nottinghamshire, which was established in 1917, and created a testing programme there for aero engines and       equipment. The building is largely intact and features many surviving fixtures dating back to the mid-20th Century, including an engine-testing control panel, observation windows, wing spar mount assembly, roller doors, pierced metal sheet lining, as well as fittings and support for a de-tuner. These hangars have now been given a Grade II listed building status.

The prototype of the first Jet-powered Vertical Take-off and Landing Plane TMR (Thrust Measuring Rig) more commonly known as the ‘Flying Bedstead’ was researched and tested at Rolls Royce in Hucknall. This came about as a result of discussions in 1952 to investigate vertical take-off and landing.

The airframe first saw the light of day on 3rd July 1953 and was the result of a contract for 2 experimental airframes from the Ministry of Supply. Its resemblance to a 4-poster bed soon earned it its nickname The picture is of the Flying Bedstead

TRACK OF THE DAY

“New Year’s Resolution” by Otis Redding and Carla Thomas

Highest Chart Position: Did not chart. A track from the King & Queen album by Otis Redding and Carla Thomas. Looking to replicate the success of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (and Kim Weston and more), Stax Records combined two of their biggest stars to knock an album together. The result, 1967’s minor soul classic King & Queen, was recorded in six days with Thomas and Redding backed by Isaac Hayes and Booker T & the MGs. The LP helped turn Redding into a major star a year before his tragic plane crash.
