THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

GOOD NEWS WEEK 4.2.2021

Even in these days of Covid-19 you can still find plenty of positive news stories on the internet if you search long and hard enough. And I’m always doing that! Here are six GOOD NEWS SNIPPETS from Country Living Magazine.

Good news alert! 6 positive things

  1. DANCING PENSIONERS TO GO ON NEW ROAD SIGN

Designers at SwaG Design have won a competition to create a new, ‘age positive’ road sign to warn drivers of elderly people. The old sign depicted two hunched over figures with walking sticks, an image which the Centre for Ageing Better charity thought was a negative stereotype and could fuel self-fulfilling prophecies in our elderly population. The winning design, decided in partnership with Public Health England, should be ready in February.

  1. 50 COUNTRIES JOINED FORCES TO PROTECT 30% OF EARTH’S LAND AND SEA

The High Ambition Coalition for People and Nature (HAC), chaired by France, Britain and Costa Rica, announced plans this week to conserve 30% of our planet’s land and oceans by 2030. The agreement, made by all 50 countries in the coalition, was confirmed at the One Planet Summit for Biodiversity, in Paris. The HAC will now take the ’30×30′ objective to the UN Council on Biodiversity meeting in China, in May 2021.

  1. CHILDREN IN ENGLAND GOT FREE ACCESS TO BOOKS

A virtual library has opened to make sure children have free access to books while schools are closed. Created by The National Literacy Trust and the Oak National Academy, children will be able to read one book a week by a nominated author. 4.1 million children have used the Virtual School Library in the last two weeks.

  1. BEING AN ECO-WARRIOR BECAME OFFICIALLY SEXY

Research has revealed that a third of Brits think being eco-conscious is ‘sexy’. The study, by green energy company Bulb, found that 51% of single Brits are looking for a partner who is eco-friendly and lives a sustainable lifestyle. This attractive quality is even more of a priority for younger generations, with 68% of Millennials and Gen Z singletons rating it high on the list of things they look for in a partner. Top turn-offs include wasting food on a date (24%), littering (43%) and eating meat (8%).

  1. THE FIRST EVER RESCUE DOG MOVED INTO THE WHITE HOUSE

The inauguration of a new President in the US made history in a number of ways. One of those? The first rescue dog has moved into the White House. President Joe Biden has two dogs, Major and Champ. Joe and Jill Biden adopted Major in 2018 from the Delaware Humane Association, giving him a loving new home. “From shelter pup to First Dog at the White House, Major Biden is barking proof that every dog can live the American dream,” said a spokesperson from the rehoming association. Read more about President Biden’s dogs here.

  1. SEAWEED FARMS IN WALES COULD MAKE ECO-FRIENDLY MEALS FOR COWS

UK firm, Carbon Kapture, revealed plans this week to create seaweed farms off the coast of Wales. The seaweed will help to remove carbon dioxide from the ocean and also produce an eco-friendly cattle feed. Kelp seaweed grows 30 times faster than a tree so it is thought to be a more effective carbon extractor. Sites being considered for the first farms are Carmarthen Bay and St Brides Bay in South Wales — along with areas in Cornwall, Devon, Yorkshire and Scotland.
