THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY
Harry Hill says he ignored Simon Cowell’s requests to change the show
Simon Cowell was left fuming after he accused Harry Hill of portraying him as “an idiot” in his spoof X Factor musical.
However the TV Burp star refused to change the character and the pair have not spoken since.
Hill described working with Cowell during their 2014 theatre flop as “a little bit cold”.
He said: “He sent me an email after he came to one of the previews and the email said some very good points about lighting and sound because he is a good producer. But he added however, ‘I feel my character, the character of Simon Cowell, is made to look a bit of an idiot’. And I thought ‘uh-oh’.”
Hill did not respond to Cowell’s requests to change things. He said: “I just ignored them. I thought that was the best bet.”
He added: “It is fine – I haven’t heard from him since.” Hill blamed himself for the failure of I Can’t Sing, saying it was conceived after “a few drinks”.
He admitted: “It was all my fault in many ways. It was an odd thing because me and Steve Brown, who wrote the music, had the idea. I was in front of the X Factor final and I had a few drinks and I thought ‘this is it – X Factor the musical’.
“I managed to get through to Simon Cowell and suddenly we were in his office pitching this idea and he says ‘yes, what do we have to do? I am giving you the green light – you are coming to London’. And then me and Steve stumble outside and think ‘what are we going to do now? We have to write it’.”
I Can’t Sing! The X Factor Musical was a musical comedy written by Harry Hill, with music and additional lyrics by Steve Brown. Based on the TV series The X Factor, the musical made its West End and world premiere in March 2014, at the London Palladium. Due to low ticket sales, it closed just 6 weeks and 3 days later on 10 May 2014, reportedly losing £4 million. By 22nd May 2013 £6 million had been invested in the show.
– Harry Hill’s Tea Time will return to Sky One on Tuesday.
