 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Kate Bush song returns to top 10 for first time in a decade thanks to Stranger Things

Kate Bush is back in the UK top 10 for first time in a decade and it’s all thanks to Stranger Things.

Her song Running Up That Hill achieved viral success after season 4 of Stranger Things hit Netflix, and the track has quite literally been running up the Official Chart as a result, even though the single was originally released in 1985.

Featured as one of the emotional lynchpins in the journey of character Max (played by Sadie Sink), Kate has been exposed to a whole new generation following the show’s debut on Netflix.

She’s garnered a whole host of new fans now, who are venturing deep into her discography and falling in love with her old hits.

As it stands, Running Up That Hill is a re-entry in the Singles Chart at number 8.

This is the track’s first time in the top 10 since 2012, when a new mix of the song was featured in the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Originally released as the lead single from Hounds of Love, Running Up That Hill then peaked at number 3, becoming Kate’s second highest-ever charting single in the UK (after debut number 1 single Wuthering Heights).

This week, Running Up That Hill shifts 48,000 chart sales – its most impressive week of sales in the UK since digital sales tracking began in 2005.

On this remarkable achievement, Official Charts Company CEO Martin Talbot says: ‘It is fantastic to see Running Up That Hill returning to the top 10 this week, driven by its feature in Stranger Things, introducing Kate Bush and this iconic 80s hit to a brand-new audience.’

Liam Gallagher also has plenty of reasons to celebrate after bagging his fourth solo number one album with C’Mon You Know, as well as two top five singles entries.

It comes as no surprise that Kate’s song has achieved roaring success, given that Stranger Things – which is known for its 1980s nostalgia – has a major following.

The latest series has, in fact, been hailed as the most bizarre yet, with the ‘out of this world’ thrilling sci-fi show following a new ‘war’ for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and the rest of the Hawkins gang.

Despite it being three years since the last season, S4 is just as scary as we’d expect, with a new gruesome villain known as Vecna.

Stranger Things is available to stream now on Netflix.
