THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY
Keep Out! is a Lift-the-Flap Book by Sally Grindley (Author), Peter Utton (Illustrator) and is two year old grandson, George’s favourite book of the moment.
One of the best things in the world for me is when unprompted and out of the blue a child (not just a grandchild) brings a book to you and wants to climb on your knee for you to read to them.
George has done that for as long as he has been able to crawl. He so loves books. He has so much respect for them, too. In all of his two years I have never seen him pick up or hold a book upside down.
We, as Grandad and Mamma buy books for one of two end uses: firstly for an individual grandchild to keep or secondly for Grandad and Mamma’s library.
The books bought for the individual child are because we think it is really suited for what that child is interested in. Grandad and Mamma’s library is made up of books all the children love.
Initially “Keep Out!”, which is a lift the flap book, was bought for the library. But the books in the library are mobile. On childminding days or babysitting nights I always take a selection of books with me.
Although the book came out in 2014 we have only just discovered “Keep Out!”. I thought it a good selection for the youngest two grandchildren.
I took it in my bag and read it to George on a baby minding day. The blurb for the book reads:
“A long-awaited sequel to the award-winning and bestselling Shhh!
“Based on Goldilocks and The Three Bears, Keep Out! physically involves the reader in the narrative and adventure. Can you get through the book without coming face-to-face with a scary bear? What will you do if you see one? Why shut the book of course! Young children can lift the flaps as they follow the adventure.”
Although I could not act to save my life I do add drama when reading to the children. I defy anyone not to be dramatic when they read this book aloud to a child.
At the end (sorry to spoil it) we come face to face with Daddy Bear. You can feel George’s scardiness.
I say “Oh no! Daddy Bear. Quick, shut the book.”
George giggled so much and askes for it again…and again…and again, oh, and again to infinity.
We had no choice but transfer that book from Grandad and Mamma’s Library to George’s personal stock. Just try taking that book off him, not if you value your life.
I would say another one for the bookshelf to accompany “Don’t Put Your Finger In The Jelly, Nelly” and “You Choose”, and hundreds of others, but I’d be wrong. His books never stay on the shelf for long. They are well used.
Sally Grindle, the author of “Keep Out!” has been a children’s author for more than 30 years (lucky person!) and has had over 150 books published. Her writing ranges from picture books for the very young to fiction for pre-teens. Here is a list of some of her wonderful titles:
