LEGACY IS JUST A BOOK
jeanniejeanniejeannie.co.uk BLOG Thursday 22nd August 2019
Recently whilst researching amazing literary facts I came across this snippet of information:
“While penniless and dying, Ulysses S Grant wrote a book of memoirs so his wife could live off of the royalties. Mark Twain heard the best royalty offer was 10% and immediately offered Grant 75%. Grant’s book, was a critical and commercial success giving his wife about $450,000 in royalties.”
Our photograph shows the house where Ulysses S Grant was born and brought up.
What a great thing to do I thought. I have no need to worry about leaving legacies or getting published in my lifetime. I’ll just take a leaf from this gut’s book as it were.
Here’s a regular guy, just like me. Totally broke, just like me. But he writes his memoirs on his death bed that sorts everything. I can do that. So until then I can relax.
I thought I’d just check out his memoirs to get some pointers as to how to make them interesting.
Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant; (April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885) was an American soldier, politician, and international statesman who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. During the American Civil War, General Grant, with President Abraham Lincoln, led the Union Army to victory over the Confederacy. During the Reconstruction Era, President Grant led the Republicans in their efforts to remove the vestiges of Confederate nationalism, racism, and slavery.
His company went bankrupt which left him penniless.
I know all the US presidents for the 20th and 21st centuries but those earlier I have never bothered with. So I was not aware he had been president.
But I’m sure with my creative writing talent I can make my memoirs as interesting if not more so than his,
