Lego Dream Builders

Lego Dream Builders

R U JOKING, GRANDAD BLOG   1st October 2017

I believe Lego is awesome and is a major component of the grandparent’s (inparticular Grandad’s) kit.

I am fortunate enough to have a grandson that is a Lego addict and I am sure there will be more Lego addicts in our family as others of my grandchildren grow older and fall under the Lego spell.

Lego was started by a Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Kristiansen who opened a woodwork shop in Billund, Denmark with his 12 year old son Godtfred 85 years ago in 1932. He named the shop Lego in 1934, from the Danish words ‘leg godt’, meaning ‘play well’.

They made wooden ladders, stools and toys. In 1934 they had only six employees, today they have approximately 17,000 employees.

Lego Facts and figures:

24 times around the world is how far the Lego bricks sold in a year would stretch if they were laid end to end.

1949 is the year Lego created the first Automatic Binding Brick in four colours which we love today.

915 million is the number of combinations for putting just 6 standard Lego bricks together.

4 billion minifigure have been made since the first in 1978. This makes them the world’s largest population group (if they were alive)!

40 billion Lego bricks would be needed to reach the moon with a column from earth. The column would be over 384,400 km tall.

In 2010 Top Gear presenter James May built the world’s first full-size Lego house which was fully functional,  – including a working toilet, hot shower and a very uncomfortable bed – using 3.3million differently coloured plastic bricks. He and 1,000 volunteers built the 20ft-tall Lego house on a Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking, Surrey.

A US estate agent has put a calculator online that works out how many bricks would be needed to make a Lego doppelganger of your home.

Check how many bricks and cost to build your dream house in Lego bricks.

I used calculated that it would take 9,442,180 Lego bricks at a cost of  $944,21 8to build a 1800 sqft, 2-story detached house.

But I an advised that buying enough to build the shell of a new build UK home, which on average has an area of about 79 sq m (850 sq ft), would cost about £1.1m. Far more than the average price of £199,016 for a semi-detached house built of real bricks.

Lego sells bricks in bulk via its Pick a Brick store. This sells 100 4×2 white bricks for £19ish. The 4×2 brick is the standard unit on which Movoto bases its calculations.

Interesting other bits: the plural of Lego is Lego.

LEGO DUPLO bricks are eight times the size of original LEGO bricks. Because of the universal system they will still connect together.

There are actually enough Lego bricks on Earth to stack from the Earth to the moon – ten times.

Lego was named the world’s most powerful brand this year ahead of Disney and Google.

And finally Lego sales will excel this week because my grandson Rory is five years old on Monday!
