Today Thursday 4th October 2018 is NATIONAL POETRY DAY

Here are four poems from my favourite poets to get you in the mood

  1. A millionbillionwillion miles from home

Waiting for the bell to go. (To go where?)

Why are they all so big, other children?

So noisy? So much at home they

Must have been born in uniform

Lived all their lives in playgrounds

Spent the years inventing games

That don’t let me in. Games

That are rough, that swallow you up.

And the railings.

All around, the railings.

Are they to keep out wolves and monsters?

Things that carry off and eat children?

Things you don’t take sweets from?

Perhaps they’re to stop us getting out

Running away from the lessins. Lessin.

What does a lessin look like?

Sounds small and slimy.

They keep them in the glassrooms.

Whole rooms made out of glass. Imagine.

I wish I could remember my name

Mummy said it would come in useful.

Like wellies. When there’s puddles.

Yellowwellies. I wish she was here.

I think my name is sewn on somewhere

Perhaps the teacher will read it for me.

Tea-cher. The one who makes the tea.

Roger McGough

  1. I waz walking down Wyefront street

When me trousers ran away,

I waz feeling incomplete

But still me trousers would not stay,

When I found where they had gone

De pair addressed me rather blunt,

And they told me they were sick of being put on

Back to front.

I told dem I would treat dem good

And wear dem back to back,

I promised dem protection

From a friend who is a mac,

Me trousers did not believe a single word I had to say,

And me underpants were laughing

When me trousers ran away.

Benjamin Zephaniah

  1. Who’s Who – Poem by Benjamin Zephaniah

I used to think nurses

Were women,

I used to think police

Were men,

I used to think poets

Were boring,

Until I became one of them.

Benjamin Zephaniah

  1. Chirpy by Shirley Hughes from Alfie, Rhymes for Annie Rose

All the house is quiet,

Curtains tightly drawn,

But someone sings a little song

To welcome in the dawn.

It’s not time for breakfast,

Too soon to play,

But someone’s very chirpy

And ready for the day.

Heads deep in pillows,

Underneath the clothes,

But all the birds are wide awake

And so is Annie Rose.
