Nearly 50 shops closed per day in first half of year, research shows

Almost 50 chain stores per day closed down on British high streets, retail parks and shopping centres in the first half of the year, according to research.

But the rate of closures slowed compared with the first six months of 2020, a survey conducted for accountancy firm PwC found.

Figures collected by the Local Data Company showed 8,739 shops shut across Britain in the first half of the year. With 3,488 opening in the same period, this reflected a net decrease of 5,251.

In the first half of last year as the Covid crisis began to bite, 11,120 shops closed for a net decrease of 6,001 – 750 more net closures than in the first six months of this year.

PcW said government pandemic supports such as the extended furlough scheme, business rates relief and government-underwritten loans have played major roles in helping operators stay afloat, along with the impact of the rent moratorium.

But the firm warned the second half of this year will be “make or break” for many outlets as Government assistance is wound down.

Lisa Hooker, leader of industry for consumer markets at PwC UK, said: “After an acceleration in store closures last year coupled with last-minute Christmas tier restrictions and lockdowns extending into 2021, we might have expected a higher number of store closures this year. Government support has proved to be a lifeline.

“However, the next six months will be make or break for many, particularly with the reinstatement of business rates, the winding down of furlough and the need for agreement on rent arrears, as well as uncertainty for hospitality businesses around further lockdowns, vaccine passports and other operating restrictions.”

The study surveyed more than 200,000 outlets operated by businesses with more than five branches across Britain, including retail, restaurants, banks, cafes and gyms.

Fashion retailers were worst affected, with 1,063 stores closing in the first half of the year, ahead of charity shops with 452 closures, car and motorbike outlets (428) and betting shops (337).

City centres were hit the most severely as people and businesses moved more to suburban or out-of-town locations, reflecting the rise in working from home. City centres suffered a 4.3% drop in their number of retail outlets, compared with a 3% decrease for commuter towns and a 2.3% decline in villages.

London went from being the best-performing region by this measure in 2016, with a 0.9% fall, to the worst across the past two years, with a 2.9% drop, the study showed.

Retail parks, with 636 net closures, fared better in the first half of this year compared with high streets (3,643) and shopping centres (1,464).

Top 10 Things That Will Never Change Over Time

There are many things which we can say will never change over time. We, human beings are so used to it that we cannot let it change. Human brain when gets adjusted to some things cannot get over it and tend to stick with it no matter what comes and goes. There are many little things which we take for granted, but can’t really think of lives without it. Adapting to new things is not easy. Some things have now become a part of our daily life. Many men jokingly say that women will never change, but the fact is yes. Let’s start with things that will never change over time.

  1. Love

This indeed is one word that tops the list of things that will never change over time. Love between couples, love between kids and their mothers etc. Love is the most beautiful word that can bring smile on our loved ones face. Saying simple words like I Love You can make wonders. There are thousands of books written on this topic so naming it on the top is definitely the best thing to do.

  1. Gadgets

Need for gadgets is another thing that will never change over time. Simple gadgets like mobiles, mixer’s and many other little things have been a part of our daily life. Thinking life without these would be extremely difficult. Mobiles are not something that were invented centuries ago, but as humans are new gadgets are the need of the life and the need for it is one among the things that will never change over time.

  1. Hope

Hope is another thing that can never change. Hope acts like fuel to human lives. It is only on hope that we see the light of another day. It is rightly said that it is just hope that keeps us going. Without hope life would be dull and boring.

  1. Human Life Cycle

These are two things that will never change over time. A man or woman i.e. every human being has to pass through several stages of life to be what he/she is. First a fetus  gets formed within a mother’s womb, then it develops and after a period of 9 months come to existence in the form of a baby which when nurtured becomes a child and then enters the adolescence and later a complete man. Every stage of life cycle is important, and every living creature has to pass through this. Food chain is another thing that will never change over time.

  1. Religion

Love for religion is another thing that cannot change over time. Lacs of people are divided into communities because of differences in religion. Every religion has its own beliefs, and it has been so for many generations. Over years the communalism seems to have changed but it is far from getting abolished from our society. So naming religion among the things that will never change over time would not be wrong.

  1. Children

Like men and women, habits of children are other things that will never change over time. Every child is different, but the habits and naughtiness do not change much. Every kid ought to be naughty and this will never change over time. Our fathers and mothers were naughty when they were kids and their parents too were naughty. So this has been so right from the time humans were born.

  1. Clock

No matter how much we invent new things, clock has been like that for ages. There might be inventions like digital clock and stuff, but the basic clock always runs on a 24 hour system. No invention and discovery can change this fact, so clock is one among the other things that tops the list of things that will never change over time.

  1. Invention

Inventing new things are human passion and this fact will not change over time. Humans are the only living animals who have no satisfaction. They always need more and this acts as motivation to invent more modern things. Inventing new things is an ongoing process and this has been so for ages. This is another thing that will never change over time.

  1. Men

On the 9th position we have men. When we talk about the fairer sex we cannot let behind the darker ones. Like they say, men will always be men no matter what it takes. Women find men unpredictable unlike women and they have been so for centuries. So men, actually their hobbies and behaviour are the things that will never change over time.

  1. Women

Yes, women traits are said to be the ones who can really not change over time. Shopping, cleaning etc. is women’s trait and one can find every woman doing it. Researchers have researched women to be predictable and it has been so for ages. So women are one among the things that can never change over time.

Happiness is…shopping the sgops!

“If I was an Olympic athlete, I’d rather come in last than win the silver medal. You win the gold, you feel good. You win the bronze, you think, ‘at least I got something.’ But you win that silver, that’s like, ‘Congratulations, you almost won! Of all the losers, you came in first! You’re the number one loser! No one lost ahead of you!’” – Jerry Seinfeld
