THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
POUNDLAND AND RAMPANT INFLATION
I know we are suffering from hyper inflation and this story I am going to relate is hard proof
I think Poundland lost the plot. Do you remember the good old days when everything in Poundland cost, yes, you got it £1? The big wind up was to go into Poundland and say “How much is this?” and it was always “£1”.
When I used to go to work on the tram in those dreamy far off days, I remember hearing two old ladies sitting behind me and talking.
One said proudly “Look at this I bought it at Poundland.”
The other said, “That’s nice. How much was it?”
“Only £1” Answered the first old lady. “Everything is only £1 at Poundland.”
“Your pulling my leg. What even if it’s £1.50?” Asked the second old lady.”
“Yes, that’s why it’s called Poundland.”
“Huh! They’ll soon go broke then, won’t they?” Said the second old lady disgusted.
Last Saturday we walked past a Poundland shop. They had a window display filled with a POUNDLAND Special Edition Monopoly.
This is the description:
Poundland Monopoly celebrates our famous brand and allows you to become part of the fun!
The one stop shop for the latest brands, beauty and homeware trends, Poundland is adored by savvy shoppers nation wide!
This Poundland Monopoly Limited Edition sees players take a shopping trip as they buy and build Poundland stores. Fill your baskets with amazing items at mind blowing prices, and race through the check outs – just be sure not to get into trouble along the way!
Fun for all of the family and any Poundland fans! Hasbro Games Ltd.
Our two eldest grandchildren are fanatical about Monopoly. They have us play it whenever they come. We are limited to Christmas edition and Classic (Vintage 1985) edition.
Mamma rushed in to buy the Poundland one. You couldn’t not buy it and add it to Mamma and Grandad’s Famous Monopoly Collection at £1. What a find! What a bargain.
But Mamma emerged from the shop without the Monopoly.
“Where is it?” I asked.
“Poundland my arse.” Bemoaned Mamma. “They are £15 a game. Poundland is not what it was!”
Mega-inflation. If you’d have asked I suppose they would have blamed Covid-19, staff off self isolating with Omicron, a shortage of HGV drivers, the Russia – Ukraine Crisis and Boris Johnson’s Partygate. Which is fair enough I suppose.
On the subject of Monopoly. My grandson showed me a wonderful YouTube Channel. American of course. It was a group of people playing Monopoly on a Full Lifesize board that took up a whole fair-sized room. There was about 8 young people (to someone like me over 70, that is anyone under the age of 50) taking in turns to throw two enormous die and physically moving around the board and paying real dollars. And getting $200 for passing go. There was even a life-size cage with bars as the jail. Brilliant and cool. I want to play it
