One of the many joys and probably one of the major joys I have found as a grandparent is seeing my grandchildren develop their own individual skills and interests as they have grown and developed.

Freya (6½) swimming, writing, dancing, fashion and agility. Ewan (4) football, swimming, books, farms and computers. George (3) cars, swimming, cars, books, cars and observational skills oh, and cars.

Rory (6½) art (particularly drawing & painting, Lego, books and writing.

He is always interested in my writing and has started to type out a couple of books on the computer. That beats me by a couple of years. I wrote my first ‘book’ at 8 years old.

He is always asking to see my writings, all my 900+ book  masterpieces on the computer and complains that most are only 5 pages long and should be at least 20 pages.

But he surprised us all a few days ago when unprompted and out of the blue he hand wrote his list of favourite books. I have reproduced the list at the head of this post.

Is the love of reading, writing and list production an influence (seen me and his mum do it and copy’s) or is it in the genes. Who knows? Scientists or psychologists, perhaps.

On his list of books I also know he loves The Mixed Up Chameleon by Eric Carle, he loves every Mr Men and Little Miss book. And he loves everything Kes Gray has written from the “Oi” series to especially the “Daisy” books, which he has a special love for.

No matter how we analyse it what has happened is that Rory like all four of my grandchildren have been fortunate enough to be brought up in a world of books and it shows.

As you get older the dreams you had and did not achieve pass to your children and your children’s children. My dream now is that one or all of my grandchildren become the published writer I dreamed of being and didn’t pull off.

I really think they could pull it off.
