Sandy Bay Surprise (Rory and Ruby Adventures) – by Alison Caldwell (Author), Anne Kenmure (Illustrator)
Paperback: 32 pages
Age Range: 2-6+ years
Publisher: Rory and Ruby Ltd
Rory and Ruby live at Sandy Bay, which sounds a beautiful place in this book. The two children are friends and have adventures with Scruffy McDuff, Rory’s dog.
The names used and the setting for this story just prove you are in for a treat, not just for this book but for any Rory and Ruby books. I love the characters especially Scruffy McDuff. I’d enjoy having a dog like him.
The book is wonderfully written giving a magical story suitable for reading aloud to young children. Alternatively you could lettolder early readers have a go at reading it aloud themselves.
The vivid, colourful and lively pictures will keep youngsters entertained and give them plenty to chat excitedly about..
The book makes a good bedtime story to. Adults and children bedding down for a night’s sleep after reading this book both should be inspired for sweet dreams of life by the beautiful sea.
Apparently St Andrews in Scotland was the inspiration for the story. That is not surprising for the story is as beautiful as St. Andrews. It is one of my favourite Scottish cities and the story brings back memories of many excellent times we have spent on that coastline.
My eldest grandson, who is six tomorrow is named Rory. He loves the book too, as do all four grandchildren, and not just because he’s flattered the main character has the same name as himself.
About the book:
The day is just beginning and the tide is out when Rory, Scruff McDuff and their best ever friend Ruby make a surprising discovery on Sandy Bay beach. It isn’t the moon knocked out of the sky. It isn’t a golf ball. And it definitely isn’t something to eat… A magical story that celebrates the fun of friendship and playing at the seaside. Rory, star of the popular Rory Stories picture book series is back! He’s a little bit older and wiser and he has a new friend, Ruby. Together with Rory’s loyal dog Scruff McDuff, they’re set for lots of fresh fun in the new series of Rory & Ruby Adventures, helped and sometimes hindered by familiar faces and great new characters.
Launched in 1999, the Rory Stories were one of Scotland’s most successful picture book series over the next 10 years, with fans ranging from pre-school children to early readers. Written by Alison Caldwell and illustrated by Anne Kenmure, the new series of Rory & Ruby Adventures echoes the magical blend of fantasy, fun and the joy of playing on the beach that captured hearts first time around. Friendship is the theme of the first book in the series, Sandy Bay Surprise.
