WELCOME TO SMOOTH RADIO’S ALL TIME TOP 500!

Smooth Radio asked YOU the listeners to name your favourite songs of all time. You voted in your thousands and the full Top 500 has been revealed.

The Great British public have cast their votes for the Top 500 most loved songs of all time. While Queen’s mighty epic usually romps home at the top, it has been nudged down one spot by something rather more bittersweet and gentle. It turns out we are a nation of softies with our hearts (and ears) firmly fixed in the past. Over 75,000 people voted and the results have been coming in all through May Day the Bank Holiday weekend on Smooth Radio.

1956 Elvis Presley enters UK charts with “Heartbreak Hotel”.

1963 The Beatles start a 30-week run at No.1 on the UK album charts with their debut album ‘Please Please Me’. Recorded in less than 13 hours, the record becomes the longest running No.1 album by a group ever.

868 This copy of the Diamond Sūtra in Chinese language, complete with a beautifully illustrated frontispiece, is the world’s earliest dated, printed book. It was produced on the 11 May 868, according to the Western calendar. Where did it come from? The Diamond Sutra. A sutra is a sermon spoken by the historical Buddha, many thousands of which survive. The Diamond Sutra, a central text of Indian Buddhism, was first translated from Sanskrit into Chinese in about AD 400, some four centuries before the development of printing.
