THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

WHAT DO YOU DO ALL DAY GRANDAD?

I do not know how I ever found time to work is a hackneyed phrase I find myself using all the time. But my grandchildren and daughters and husbands all look at me quizzically and say, “What do you manage to do all day, Grandad.”

Even my brother who is four years younger than me and lives alone says “Well, you have nothing to do all day”.

I’ll just add that he’s still in a time warp of the 1950s politically incorrect generation and thinks if you are married your wife does all the chores of the partnership.

I assure everyone who is concerned about my welfare, that my time is fully occupied and I could do with at least another twelve hours every day and eight days in every week, giving me another one hundred and eight hours to fit everything in.

So that folk are in no doubt I have decided to write a weekly column answering the question: “What do you do all day, Grandad?”

The first and foremost thing I do all day is be a “Grandad”. Being a “granddad” is a 24/7 task, if you are going to do it properly.

Being a “grandad” also involves being a husband and being a father, all of which are very time consuming commitments.

My wife (Mamma) and myself have four grandchildren aged five and under. Three are boys, one, Freya is a girl.

We have two children, both girls and I do not care what anyone says, no matter how you bring them up there is a definite difference between boys and girls. I tell you that from very bitter, exhausted experience. The difference between boys and girls is within their basic being.

We do a minimum of eighteen childminding hours a week. That is a minimum and can vary a lot due to what is going on in everyone’s busy lives. We do try to make ourselves available for inset days, emergencies and anything else that occurs.

As totally committed grandparents we are out to make our grandparent/grandchild relationship one of the best and most memorable in the short time we will share on this mortal planet together, To achieve this we need to put in preparation time for each visit, the same preparation that is demanded of teachers for their daily lesson plans.

This involves researching interesting books, games to play and more bizarre and unusual special things to do that will create lasting warm memories of grandparent/grandchildren time.

Being a grandparent keeps us young, forces us into being energetic and forces us to attempt to at least be aware of latest technology, fashion and trends.

So with our commitment just being grandparents can occupy us all day, every day and in answer to “What do you do all day, Grandad?” we are justified to say “Grandparenting”.

But it’s more complexed than that with far more things we need to do. So over the weeks I shall give an insight into the all the things I do so that you get full chapter and verse in answer to “What do you do all day, Grandad?”

ROALD DAHL INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE FOR THE DAY

“When you grow up and have children of your own, do please remember something important: A stodgy parent is not fun at all! What a child wants – and DESERVES – is a parent who is SPARKY!”

― Roald Dahl
