Orville and Emu, TV’s most famous puppets, put up for sale at auction
Former Saturday night TV star and chart topper Orville the duck is to go on sale at auction.
The green, nappy-wearing duckling was a regular on television during the 1980s and 1990s, under the watchful eye of ventriloquist Keith Harris.
His popularity followed in the webbed steps of Rod Hull’s Emu, the unpredictable bird prone to playfully attacking celebrities, which is also going on sale.
Bonhams, the London auction house, has listed the famous puppets for sale with guide prices upwards of £8,000 each.
At the height of their popularity Orville and Harris sold more than 400,000 singles featuring Orville’s catchphrase, “I wish I could fly”, which peaked at number four in the charts.
The pair continued to appear on screens until 2012, including Never Mind the Buzzcocks, a documentary with Louis Theroux and a stint in the Celebrity Big Brother house.
Emu, meanwhile, became feared by famous faces for his on-screen attacks.
He famously took a bite from the Queen Mother’s bouquet of flowers and went for Michael Parkinson knee.
Hull’s son, Toby, claimed that Emu was a misunderstood creature in a 2007 interview, saying: “People only remember the violence, but it’s an affectionate bird as well . . . He wants to make things more entertaining for himself. He gets very bored very quickly”.
Real deal on sale
Orville is described by the auction house as being “made up of a hollow hard papier-mâché body and hard papier-mâché head, both covered in bright green elasticated faux fur fabric, finished with two soft rubber red feet”.
The Orville puppet was bought from Harris in the early 2000s and is “an original puppet owned and used” by the ventriloquist during his career.
Emu is sold as “the original puppet owned and used by Rod Hull during his television and stage career” and was acquired from his estate in the early 2000s.
Both of the human stars have since died. Comedian Hull died in 1999 when he fell off the roof of his bungalow while adjusting his television aerial.
Harris was diagnosed with cancer of the spleen in 2013 and died two years later aged 67.
