WORLD BOOK DAY

WORLD BOOK DAY

jeanniejeanniejeannie.co.uk BLOG 7th March 2019

Today is WORLD BOOK DAY.

All children should be given a special £1 book token at school. If they then go along to their local participating bookshop or WHS they will find a selection of 12 special £1 books to choose from.

The idea is to get children into loving reading and books which is so important!

These are the books:

  1. HUBERT HORATIO: A VERY FISHY TALE

A hilarious new story about Hubert Horatio Bartle Bobton-Trent from Lauren Child – the superstar creator of Clarice Bean and Charlie and Lola – published especially for World Book Day!

A full-length HUBERT HORATIO title, How to Raise Your Grown Ups, was released last year and a new Hubert Horatio book is coming out in October!

When Hubert Horatio is a baby, his parents take him on an outing. But it’s not long before they are distracted by something in a shop window and let go of his pram. Hubert is surprised to find himself hurtling faster and faster down the hill before plummeting – splash! – into some water. From being mistaken for a haddock and wrapped in newspaper to granting three wishes, there are no end of surprises in this funny fishy tale, which proves that Hubert is indeed “one in a TRILLION”.

  1. THE GREAT ROCKET ROBBERY

Laika and her fellow street dogs are being trained up for the greatest adventure in history – a trip to the moon! But Laika can’t wait to see the stars – so she hatches a plan with her friends to get her there all on her own . . .

Join Laika and friends in The Great Rocket Robbery by Carnegie Medal-winning author Frank Cottrell-Boyce – final destination: adventure!

  1. THE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIANS: CRUELLA AND CADPIG

Celebrate World Book Day 2019 with this wonderful new picture book, based on the much-loved characters from The Hundred and One Dalmatians.

When Cadpig gets lost playing hide-and-seek, she stumbles into the path of evil Cruella de Vil . . . But can her new furry friends help her to escape?

A charming new story from Peter Bently and Steven Lenton, based on Dodie Smith’s iconic characters. Get your paws on it this World Book Day! And if you LOVE this book as much as we do, check out their picture book adaptation of The Hundred and One Dalmations.

  1. TEN LITTLE BOOKWORMS

Ten little bookworms set off to explore the library. As they munch their way through stories of every kind, each little bookworm is whisked off into an exciting tale. From prehistoric swamps and spooky castles to outer space and jungle treetops, the bookworms discover amazing adventures in every story they explore.

  1. CLAUDE BEST IN SHOW

Meet Claude – the ordinary dog with an extraordinary life – in this very special short story created especially for World Book Day 2019 . The Great Waggy Avenue Dog Show is happening today – and there are medals galore to be won! Claude nearly wags his tail off and Sir Bobblysock’s bobbles tingle with excitement. If only they knew a dog so Claude and Sir Bobblysock could take part . . .

Claude is now the star of his very own TV show on Disney Junior with 52 episodes.

  1. BAD MERMAIDS MEET THE WITCHES

Once every one hundred years, the mermaids of the Hidden Lagoon and the witches of Sinkville get together for a party! The Top Witch greets the Mermaid Queen, who is wheeled through the streets of Sinkville in a bathtub. Mermaids Beattie, Mimi and Zelda can’t wait to meet a real witch, but when Tiga is unexpectedly sucked down the plughole into the Hidden Lagoon before the celebrations even start, things start to go magically, marvellously, megalodon-sharkally WRONG.

Sibeal Pounder brings together the characters from her brilliant, bonkers, bestselling Bad Mermaids and Witch Wars series for a once-in-a-lifetime World Book Day adventure.

  1. DIARY OF GREG HEFFLEY’S BEST FRIEND

A brand new Diary of a Wimpy Kid story for World Book Day 2019!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid’s  protagonist Greg Heffley has chronicled his middle school years in thirteen journals… and counting. Now it’s time for readers to hear from Greg’s trusty best friend, Rowley Jefferson, in a journal of his own.

In Diary of Greg Heffley’s Best Friend, by Greg Heffley’s Best Friend,  Rowley agrees to take on the role of biographer, recording his pal’s every triumph and tribulation. But it turns out Rowley is a poor choice for the job, and his “biography” is a comically rambling mess.

  1. PERCY JACKSON AND THE SINGER OF APOLLO

A hilarious short story from Rick Riordan, that unites Percy Jackson with the god Apollo – this edition exclusively for World Book Day 2019

When the god Apollo asks for a favour, it’s never going to be straightforward.

Percy Jackson is celebrating a friend’s birthday when Apollo turns up. The god is supposed to perform on Mount Olympus, but one of his four beautiful singers is missing.

So Percy sets off to bring her back – but one of the singers is after a shot at a solo career, and is holding up New York! With the bright lights of Broadway in the background, can Percy find the rogue performer, and return her to Apollo – in time for his big number on Mount Olympus?

  1. EVERDARK

It is midnight in Crackledawn – a midnight full of magic. Sea dragons stir in the depths of the ocean, silver whales surface beneath the moon and sand goblins line the shores. Everyone is waiting for the phoenix, the guardian of the kingdom’s magic, to rise up from the forests of Everdark.

But there is no sign of the phoenix tonight. Something else surges up out of Everdark instead: a harpy bent on stealing Crackledawn’s magic.

It is up to an eleven-year-old girl called Smudge and an eccentric monkey called Bartholomew to set sail beyond the legendary Northswirl and stop the harpy before it’s too late.

  1. NOUGHT FOREVER

A powerful new Noughts & Crosses story from legendary author Malorie Blackman, written for World Book Day 2019.

I’ve never been shot before. It’s dark but I keep seeing white flashes before my eyes like spots of lightning jabbing at me. Am I going into shock? Must be. But I can’t pass out, not now. Then I’ll be dead for sure.

Dan is on the run – hiding from a ruthless nought gang who want him dead.

It’s one of those nights. One of those nights where I sit alone and watch the world go by. One of those nights when if my hatred were fuel, I would happily light a match and watch the whole world burn.

Eva just wants to be left alone to mourn her daughter. But when a badly wounded Dan crosses her path, she’s compelled to help.

Both are hiding dark secrets from their past. Both have reasons to fear the other. But they are both connected to each other too, and before the night is over, Eva will be forced to choose: betray Dan, or protect him – whatever the cost.

  1. SNAP

From the award-winning author of Orangeboy and Indigo Donut, a new short story written especially for World Book Day 2019.

When Soraya’s younger brother Farhad runs off into the freezing night, Soraya and her friend, Austin, are in a race against time to find him. High above the streets, Farhad’s guilt closes in. He doesn’t want to be found.

A story of two friends, one missing boy and a secret as precious as gold.
