 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

THURSDAY 3rd March 2022 IS WORLD BOOK DAY

Has your child got their £1 Book Token?

Every child under the age of 18 will be given a £1 book token to mark World Book Day.

The tokens will either be sent directly to your house, email, or distributed by your child’s school – you should contact the school to find out how you will receive it.

WHAT IS WORLD BOOK DAY?

Let them explain:

World Book Day changes lives through a love of books and shared reading. Our mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income. We want to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and the improved life chances this brings them.

World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. It is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.

The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading.

As World Book Day founder, Baroness Gail Rebuck, recalls “We wanted to do something to reposition reading and our message is the same today as it was then – that reading is fun, relevant, accessible, exciting, and has the power to transform lives.”

2022 is the 25th year there’s been a World Book Day, and on 3rd March 2022, children of all ages will come together to share the joy of reading for pleasure.

Spending just 10 minutes a day reading and sharing stories with children can make a crucial difference to their future success and it’s fun for all involved.

That’s why World Book Day continues to encourage children and young people to read for pleasure through its work with authors, illustrators, publishers, bookshops and libraries.

HOW TO USE YOUR £1/€1.50 BOOK TOKEN

Thanks to National Book Tokens and lots of lovely book publishers and booksellers, World Book Day, in partnership with schools and nurseries all over the country, distribute over 15 million £1/€1.50 World Book Day book tokens to children and young people (that’s almost one for every child/young person under 18 in the UK and Ireland) every year on World Book Day.

The £1/€1.50 book tokens can then be swapped for one of our exclusive, new and completely FREE World Book Day books available from participating booksellers or used to get £1 off (€1.50 off in Ireland) any full price book or audiobook instead (as long as the book or audiobook costs at least £2.99 (or €3.99 in Ireland). The World Book Day £1/€1.50 books are a gift from booksellers, who fully fund the cost of the £1/€1.50 book token redemptions. Please note that the token cannot be redeemed online.

The £1/€1.50 books are also available in braille, and audio via the RNIB (Tel: 0303 123 999) and large print via Guide Dogs (Tel: 0118 9838275).

We also have exclusive titles for Wales and Ireland.

World Book Day book tokens will be valid from Thursday 17 February – Sunday 27 March 2022. Please contact your local bookseller to check if they are able to offer £1/€1.50 off other titles. Read our full terms and conditions.
